When life is rocky, God is there

Life can seem very shaky sometimes. We think we are walking on level ground and suddenly our footing slips when we hear bad news or a relationship suddenly changes. I had an email last month that completely threw me as it took the carpet from under my feet and opened the door to me feeling very inadequate and judged.  A sense of helplessness or paralysis overtakes us in such moments, but the Lord promises us that he is with us and that ‘he will never leave us helpless or relax his hold on us.’ (Hebrews 13:5 Amplified). Such commitment from the Lord is an awesome thing. Sometimes I struggle to know who to make my priority when different people I love are going through very hard times. Humanly we are very limited as to how many we can walk alongside at the same time. But God is not limited. As Psalm 139:7 expresses ‘Where can I go from your Spirit?  Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. . .’ That means that it’s not just when we’re on a spiritual high that God comes alongside us, but constantly, including those times when we feel overwhelmed, paralysed and afraid. He is alongside me and you, simply because he loves us. His compassion knows no bounds. He cares for all we are experiencing and knows how to help us. Again, as Psalm 139:3-4 says, ‘you discern my going out and my lying down, you are familiar with all my ways.  Before a word is on my tongue, you know it completely O Lord.’

If you are in that rocky place today I sense Jesus saying to you, ‘Beloved child, don’t be afraid. Take my arm and lean on me. Let me strengthen you because I know all that is happening and as you trust me and walk step by step leaning on me, I will bring you through this. I love you with an everlasting love and feel the pain of your struggles but I will never be overwhelmed. Let my joy give you strength and keep your hand in mine. With meat your side you will be able to navigate those rocky, muddy parts of your path. Don’t give up my beloved one. Don’t let the devil whisper his lies in to your heart. You are mine and you’ve been made in my image. I weep with your tears, so you can know my comfort, yes even my joy. I willingly carried your weakness and helplessness onto the cross so you could live in the power of my strength. I am with you and will never let you go or turn my back on you. Keep going forward with your hand in mine and you will come into the light of new love and peace.’

I pray this word from God’s heart will bring you the deepest comfort today and you will know new strength filling you as you walk your rocky path with him at your side.
